During the winter holiday, we went back to Lady Allum retirement village with our mobile interactive STEAM exhibition. Lady Allum was our first partner when we started reaching out to organisations, making this quite significant.
One of the skills that we majorly improved was our understanding of what our audience understands and knows. After all, trying to figure out how to present something in a manner in which everyone can understand is not easy.
The best moments were when understanding clicked. One lady was planning a route for our model AI car when we mentioned real driverless taxis exist in some places. Her face lit up with surprise. "Really? They actually exist?" she laughed, adding, "Well, I'm never getting in one of those!" Her fascination was clear. Another gentleman surprised us with his Arduino knowledge – impressive for someone keeping up with technology.
Before long, our presentation turned into real discussions about technology and change.
A nice surprise was seeing visiting grandchildren get involved. They started helping run the projects, explaining things to their grandparents and others alongside us. Those moments made the preparation feel worthwhile.
And as always, the staff provided great sandwiches and cake.
We look forward to returning with more projects
