Library Workshop Review: Hand Crank Generator

Our August 2026 Library Workshop introduced participants to the fascinating world of electricity and energy conversion through the construction of a hand crank generator. This hands-on project allowed children to explore how mechanical energy can be converted into electrical energy and used to power a light.
How It Works
The hand crank generator uses a motor, gears, and a pulley system to convert the movement of the hand crank into electrical energy. As participants turn the handle, the gears transfer and increase the rotational motion, causing the motor to spin. The spinning motor acts as a generator, producing electrical energy that powers the LED light.
Through this project, participants explored important STEM concepts including energy conversion, electricity, circuits, gears, mechanical motion, and generators. They also discovered how the same basic principle is used in real-world technologies such as wind turbines, hydroelectric generators, and bicycle dynamos.
Preparation Challenge
One of the main challenges during preparation was making sure the generator could produce enough electrical energy to light the bulb effectively. The team tested different components and gear configurations to find a setup that provided a good balance between ease of turning and electrical output. We also added an extra gear to make it easier for younger participants to turn the crank while still producing enough electricity to light the bulb.
On the Day
Participants were excited to see their lamps light up simply by turning the hand crank. Many children were surprised to discover that their own physical effort could be converted into electricity. The activity sparked lively discussions about where electricity comes from and how generators work.
It was particularly rewarding to see participants experimenting with the crank and observing how turning it faster affected the brightness of the light. One eight-year-old participant excitedly said, “I made electricity with my own hands!”
This simple reaction captured the excitement and sense of achievement that the workshop was designed to create.
